M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula

M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is a planetary nebula surrounding a white dwarf star that shed it's outer layers and created the beautiful blue and red cloud of ionised gas. The nebula itself has a diameter of just 3 light years, that is less than the distance from the sun to our nearest star. It is found approximately 1360 light years from earth. It can be found in the constellation of Vulpecula, not far from Cygnus.
